I don't care for the Three Stooges (too much anarchy, not enough heart). But I've always found it really fascinating that Jerome Fine (Curly) would show up at parties, do a quick hello to the people he knew there, then spend the rest of his time in a quiet corner with the family dog.

He found parties way too uncomfortable and over-stimulating, but he connected instantly with dogs, and found them to be very calming.

So, I have ONE thing in common with Curly!

I find this fascinating. I started playing a very little bit of informal tennis with some buddies a couple of years ago, after playing hardly any since high school. After taking some neurotransmitter supplements suggested by a psychiatrist,I did not notice much effect EXCEPT..one day, I noticed that my tennis playing seemed to improve..My shots were more "measured"..i.e my response to the incoming ball was a bit slower, more conscious, smoother and calmer. It was almost like my time perception changed slightly.

Rx for depression in one book on the subject:

Go for a walk
Find someone who is walking their dog
Pet the dog
Strike up a conversation with the owner

Works pretty well...

Most dogs evoke similar feelings in me as young children, something disarming about them -innocence, playfulness, cuteness..Do we have cuteness response wired in? In children it would seem to make sense from an evolutionary point of view. Oxytocin inducers?

I am a 23 yr old female and i do not carry a purse. I have a lil camera case made for a small digital camera with a tiny mountain climbing hook on it and it hooks on to a medium sized mountain climbing hook along side all my keys. The camera case has tiny lil mesh elastic pouch on the inside against the flap he opens up that can hold my debit/credit/insurance card(s) and drivers liscence and the empty space where a camera belongs is just big enough to hold wadded up cash and a few trinkets. ALL of this hangs from that medium sized mountain clip which clips onto my side no matter where i go. The few times i opt to go without it (ie	clubbing) if i cant give it to someone im with to hold for me i have my house and car key on their own seperate tiny mountain clip and they, come off of the medium one and get hooked inside whatever bangles are on my wrist. As for my debit card liscence and cash...they go in my bra and i have bank of america on saved in my phone so i can call at the end of the night to get a replacement lol. and lets just say ive never gotten anywhere NEAR thee expiration date on my drivers liscense lol.

Yes! I regard my border collie as my ADHD therapy dog. And he has changed my life. High five, Dr. J.

My dog also guarantees that I have fresh air and exercise twice daily, and adds a semi-thrilling aspect to it. (This breed needs to *run*—but oh, how lovely they are when they do!)

Although he lies quietly beside me while I work, he seems to intuit when I am stuck or hyperfocusing, and will either drop a toy in my lap or paw at me until I switch gears.

Best of all, his constant companionship and intensely tuned-in BC demeanour (together with my getting out and chatting with others at the dog park) has removed the loneliness I felt since moving away from like-minded friends and working in an environment of unsmiling introverts. If there is no one around who understands me, hey, at least my dog and I totally get each other, and he needs as much stimulation as I do.

Beautiful dog, by the way.

I'm more of a cat person. Cats are not demanding, and are often peaceful. They are not intrusive. A mellow cat doesn't cause a disturbance. I like a quiet environment.

That said, I have enough trouble cleaning up after myself and won't clean up after a pet. It's not worth the energy. I already have teenagers.

I am amazed that people find cats able to help with ADHD symptoms. I don't have a cat but noted. When managing children with ADHD, one of the almost universal statements I hear (>90% time) that the kid does really well with animals, and most commonly dogs.

I'd be interested to hear how people find other animals able to fulfill the basic ingredients: a) unconditional love, b) provision of structure- routine and c) creation of good habits.
