Asking ADHD Doctors On Your Behalf
While we were filming the documentary ADD & Loving It?! we interviewed nine top experts about ADHD. They came from a range of backgrounds and areas of expertise and offered a lot of information and ideas. When we heard something from two or three of these experts, it made it into the film. When we heard something from one doctor but couldn’t get anyone else to ‘bite’ and agree, we left it out. Yes, there’s lots still to be discovered about ADHD. There’s lots of controversy. We wanted to make a film about what is actually known, is helpful and works. Rather than just feed into all the controversies and opinions.
Since the film was first broadcast I have interviewed another 27 different experts. Everyone from Psychiatrists and Psychologists, to Coaches, Advocates and Therapists. Plus of course many ADDers, famous or not. Bit by bit these new faces are starting to make it into our videos.
But here’s the thing. I will be interviewing even more experts in the future and it occurred to me that you may have questions you’d like me to ask them on your behalf.
Cause your experience is different than mine. And you will have different questions.
I know that sounds obvious, but it wasn’t to me, until we started doing our workshops. Before people come into the room we ask them to take a moment and fill out a short form we call “My Big Burning Question.” It asks, “What is the one question you would most like answered in this workshop?”
Some people’s questions are three words long. Some write an essay.
To my surprise and delight, most of the questions are, in fact, going to be addressed in the workshop. Next week we’re doing a workshop on relationships and someone may ask about, say, ‘health insurance and medication.’ Those we set aside. But there are always questions we hadn’t considered. They cover topics, concerns or problems that are not on our radar. These questions tell us what we’ve missed, and suggest where we should go looking for answers. It’s great.
So here’s the point: we get to talk to doctors and experts. What do you want us to ask them?
We may even get to train doctors about what ADHD is and how to diagnose it. What do you want us to tell them?
We are going to be producing some videos on medication. What questions do you have? What do you want us to cover?
We are becoming a resource for psychiatrists. What do you want them to know? What do you want them to be aware of?
We are starting to do presentations and workshops to school boards, learning disability groups and teachers. What would you like us to tell them?

OK, maybe I could help get the ball rolling?
In no particular order:
- If you are breastfeeding and have ADHD, approximately how much of your medication is getting to your child?
- What are the best antidepressants for adult ADHD’ers ? Is there anyone keeping track of the results people are having with these, or these combos (ADHD meds + misc. antidepressants) ? ( I asked to be put on Wellbutrin when I heard a lot of anecdotal evedence, but that’s “off label”, and since there’s no publications that I’ve found to print out and bring to my Dr., she doesn’t want to try this. I assume that others must have run into this….)
I’m sure I’ll think of more….
Okay! Thanks! I will ask about it.
I’d like to know more about the relationship between glucose and ADHD. Especially since, with our tendency to crave empty carbs, we’re at increased risk of diabetes.
